Texas Curriculum Decision Making Waves

It’s hard to have missed the fact that on Friday, the Texas State Board of Education voted 10-5 in favor of a series of amendments to social studies curriculum standards that look set to affect education not just in Klein ISD, but across the country, thanks to the way that publishers distribute Texas-edition textbooks nationwide.

Klein ISD Tax Election On The Horizon?

At the Klein ISD Board meeting of March 9th, during a presentation regarding the 2010-2011 district budget, the prospect of a tax election in the near future was looking less like speculation and more like necessity.

Tax increases over the next four years are a certainty following the 2008 bond, but what now looks likely is that in addition to these increases, Klein ISD will call an election in the 2011-2012 school year to approve collection of the remaining two “super pennies”. If approved, the 2-cent (per $100 appraised value) tax increase will be matched penny for penny by the government, effectively doubling district revenues from those two cents.

Full story, with more figures, after the jump.

Bond Revision Passed!

The Klein ISD board of trustees has voted to implement Scenario C for the future of the 2008 Bond construction projects.

Option C consists of first renovating Klein High School in its current location at Louetta and Stuebner-Airline, with work beginning in 2011 and finishing in 2014. Two elementaries are to be built for 2011, and one intermediate will be completed in 2016, with a pre-kindergarten center to open no earlier than 2012. The construction of High School 5 and a pre-kindergarten facility will be delayed until a later date.

The final vote was 5-1 in favor, with Mr. David Clark not present, and Mr. Rick Mann against. Mr. Mann presented a case for implementing a revised Scenario G plan, which would have more closely followed the plan as laid out in the original bond.

How will this affect you? Discuss the decision in our Forum thread!

Bond Workshop Summary

The board held a bond workshop on December 15th at the Klein High Auditorium, where they were presented with summaries of all options currently on the table, as well as several more detailed plans for the renovation of the Klein High campus.

A 20-minute public inquiry opportunity was provided, and several community members spoke during that time.

The remainder of the meeting involved the presentation of data to the board, and resolution of questions from board members regarding the bond revision options.

Persons requiring a transcript of the meeting should contact the Klein ISD Public Information Officer, Ms. Linda Burdge.

There is a discussion open in the Klein Forums for this meeting – please visit and give us your take on the events at the workshop.
